Career Progression and Pay

UWOTC-CWA is seeking transparency and consistency in career progression and pay for Arena employees. Leadership has continued to acknowledge a backlog in deserved promotions, but only a few people are promoted each year. High-performing employees are used to proving over and over that they exceed the expectations of their role, only to end up at the back of a long line of well deserving people. This has created an environment where many employees end up working above their level for years at a time - waiting until it’s their turn to be allotted one of the scarce promotions.

Making things worse, certain roles are vaguely-defined and lack concrete metrics for performance and advancement. This robs those employees of a clear career path, and makes it impossible to plan their future. The lack of transparency in measured skills results in shifting goal posts, insufficient feedback, and little opportunity for promotion.

Bonuses and raises also lack transparency, as management has been unwilling to provide any indication or metric for how bonuses are calculated. Without yearly raises that keep up with inflation, workers place their hopes on the promise of unreliable bonuses; yet some employees receive zero bonuses, even while WOTC continues to tout Magic’s massive success and record profits.

Every employee deserves to have clearly defined performance metrics, reliable expectations for pay, and a clear path forward in their career growth. WOTC’s current role definitions, reviews, and promotion processes result in a convoluted environment where long term retention is not rewarded. On a product as old and as complex as Magic, retaining employees with years of knowledge and experience is extremely beneficial for everyone. Instead WOTC and Hasbro continue to focus on short term profits even as they pay out exuberant bonuses to executives, leaving the people who make the games in the lurch.
